The art of
fencing,
in central Iowa.

New to fencing?

Come watch before you decide.

We welcome first-time visitors to any of our weekly classes — no gear, no experience, no pressure. Just come see what fencing looks like in person.

Our mission
Two young club fencers facing off in their whites as members look on

Teach and promote the three weapons of Olympic fencing — foil, épée, and saber — for fencers of every age.

From first-time visitors to national-level competitors, the Des Moines Fencing Club cultivates a community that challenges every athlete to pursue their best.

What we teach

Three weapons, one discipline.

Weapon

Foil

A light thrusting weapon. Torso only. Right-of-way decides the point.

Weapon

Épée

Heavier and unrestricted — the entire body is target. No right of way. The duelist's weapon.

Weapon

Saber

A cutting and thrusting weapon. Everything above the waist, except the hands. No time limit. Fast and aggressive.
